His biological father struggled with alcoholism and legal issues, leading to a challenging living situation for Michael and his siblings. At the age of 3, they were removed from their home by the state, and Michael’s biological mother’s accident further altered their fate.
Michael and his younger sister, Lee Anne, were eventually adopted by Bill and Carole Haley when he was 4 years old. Bill worked as the manager of a steel mill, and Carole was a school teacher. Interestingly, Michael wouldn’t reunite with all of his siblings until over 15 years later.
